In August 2025, a tractor separated from its trailer on the A227 overbridge near Wrotham and dropped onto the M20 central reservation below. National Highways closed the motorway in both directions for 12 hours. It was not the first bridge-related closure on the road that year. It was not the last either.
The M20 runs 50.6 miles from the M25 at Swanley through Maidstone and Ashford to Folkestone, serving the Channel Tunnel and connecting to Dover via the A20. The Port of Dover and Channel Tunnel together handle 90% of all freight traffic between the UK and mainland Europe. When the M20 closes for a bridge incident or repair works, the effects spread fast, across the A20, the M2, the A2, and through roads in Kent towns that were never built for that traffic load.

Is the M20 Open Right Now?
As of 16 April 2026, there is no active bridge emergency or structural closure on the M20. Operation Brock, the contraflow system deployed between Junction 8 and Junction 9 for the Easter travel period, was removed overnight on 7 April. The motorway returned to normal operation on 8 April.
That said, the National Highways daily road closure report, updated on 15 April, lists the M20 among roads with planned full closures for the week of 15 to 21 April. Routine overnight maintenance works are continuing on the route. These closures typically run between 8pm and 6am. The Incidents Behind the M20 Bridge Closures
August 2025: A Tractor Falls From the Wrotham Overbridge
Shortly after 11:15am on Monday 18 August 2025, a tractor travelling along the A227 Gravesend Road near Wrotham separated from its trailer and fell from the overbridge onto the M20 central reservation between Junction 2 (Wrotham/M26) and Junction 3 (Addington).
Kent Fire and Rescue extracted the driver from the vehicle. He was airlifted to King’s College Hospital in a critical but stable condition. By September 2025, police confirmed he had stabilised.
National Highways launched what it described as a “significant recovery and repair operation.” The impact and a fuel spillage across the carriageway required full resurfacing and barrier replacement below the bridge. Both the A227 Gravesend Road and the M20 closed immediately. The motorway remained shut in both directions between Junction 1 and Junction 3 until 11:30pm โ roughly 12 hours after the tractor came down.
Police are still appealing for witnesses. Contact the West Kent appeals line on 01622 604100, quoting reference 18-0475.
August 2022: A Pedestrian Bridge Collapses Onto the M20
Shortly after 12:05pm on bank holiday Friday 26 August 2022, a digger being transported on the back of a lorry struck a pedestrian bridge between Junction 3 (Borough Green) and Junction 4 (Leybourne). Part of the structure fell onto a second lorry travelling below. The driver of that lorry was treated for shock at the scene.
A major incident was declared. Both M20 carriageways closed. The M26 shut coastbound. Queues stretched to Junction 6.
Alex Magaisa, a University of Kent lecturer who was driving to Gatwick with his family when the bridge came down, told Kent Online: “It was very frightening. Suddenly there was debris in the road. The bridge hit the high lorries first, which is what may have saved us.”
The M20 remained shut into the following day. Tom Tugendhat, then MP for Tonbridge, Edenbridge and Malling, raised immediate concern about traffic being displaced into villages like Ryarsh and Allington.
September 2025: Emergency Expansion Joint Failure Near Maidstone
On 15 September 2025, a damaged expansion joint forced an emergency daytime closure of the M20 eastbound between Junction 7 (Maidstone) and Junction 8 (Leeds Castle). Congestion built to Blue Bell Hill at Junction 6, backed along Detling Hill, and spread onto the M2 coastbound from Junction 3 past Junction 4 to Medway Services, all at once.
County Councillor Geoffrey Samme, representing North East Maidstone, described it directly: “If you have tried to go anywhere today, you will already be painfully aware that we are currently affected by a double whammy of emergency road works.”
National Highways confirmed full reopening at 3:19pm: “The M20 is now fully open following these emergency bridge joint repairs. Delays remain in the area but should now start to ease.”
January 2025: Lorry Strikes a Bridge on the Ashford Corridor
At 2:16am on 13 January 2025, a lorry struck a bridge over the M20 coastbound between Junction 8 and Junction 9 and jack-knifed, blocking the carriageway. Kent Police stated no injuries were reported. Specialist equipment was required to clear the debris. National Highways confirmed full reopening by 11am.
Why the M20 Keeps Needing Emergency Bridge Work
The Maidstone Bypass section of the M20 opened in 1960. The Junction 8 to Junction 9 stretch completed in 1991, built specifically for Channel Tunnel traffic. Bridge structures across those decades were not designed for 44-tonne HGVs crossing to Calais at today’s volumes, and certain components fail before their replacement is scheduled.
National Highways runs a continuous maintenance programme across M20 bridge structures. Planned works typically cover:
- Expansion joint replacement โ these components allow bridge decks to flex under load and temperature change; on heavily used freight routes they wear faster than the original design assumed
- Bridge deck resurfacing โ the surface on a bridge structure deteriorates significantly faster than standard carriageway under HGV loading
- Waterproofing renewal โ when waterproofing membranes fail, water penetrates the deck and accelerates decay in joints, bearings, and internal reinforcement
- Barrier and parapet upgrades โ safety-critical elements inspected regularly and replaced to current standards
In October 2022, National Highways replaced bridge joints, kerbs, and the deck surface on Grove Bridge near Junction 11 (Westenhanger), requiring multiple full weekend closures and nightly shutdowns between 9pm and 5am. Programme Delivery Manager Graeme Steward said at the time: “If this work is delayed it would mean a knock-on effect on other essential work in the area this year, including on bridges, potentially leading to unplanned emergency closures.”
In March 2024, National Highways returned to the stretch between Junction 5 (Aylesford) and Junction 6 (Blue Bell Hill) for bridge joint repairs described officially as “critical to maintaining and improving safety”, combined with waterproofing renewal and barrier work.
Operation Brock: When the M20 Closes for Cross-Channel Congestion
Beyond structural incidents and repair works, the M20 also closes for Operation Brock, a contraflow deployed between Junction 8 and Junction 9 when demand at Kent ports risks backing lorries deep into the county. Every deployment requires an overnight motorway closure both to install and remove the concrete barrier system.
Easter 2026 Brock deployment:
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Barrier installed overnight, M20 closed | 1 April 2026 |
| M20 reopened with contraflow active | 2 April 2026 |
| Barrier removed overnight, M20 closed | 7 April 2026 |
| M20 returned to full normal operation | 8 April 2026 |
Each deployment costs around ยฃ250,000 to install and remove. Maintaining the system while active costs approximately ยฃ100,000 per week.
Decisions rest with the Kent and Medway Resilience Forum (KMRF), a multi-agency body including National Highways, Kent Police, and Kent County Council. KMRF Strategic Lead Simon Jones said: “We only deploy Operation Brock when there is clear data showing there will be a higher than usual demand for crossings.”
When Brock is active, all HGVs heading to the Port of Dover or Eurotunnel must join the contraflow at Junction 8. Drivers who bypass the system face fines of up to ยฃ300.
M20 Diversion Route When the Road Closes
Standard coastbound diversion, Junction 8 to Junction 9:
- Exit the M20 at Junction 8
- Take the third exit at the first roundabout
- Take the first exit at the following roundabout onto the A20
- Follow the A20 to Fougeres Way, then head northbound back onto the M20 at Junction 9
HEIGHT RESTRICTION: This diversion route is limited to 4.7 metres. Taller vehicles receive separate routing instructions at the scene. Follow the hollow circle symbol on road signs. Do not follow satnav on this stretch โ it may route vehicles onto roads that cannot take HGV traffic.

In October 2022, Graeme Steward warned publicly that postponing M20 bridge maintenance would produce unplanned emergency closures. Three years later, a failed expansion joint between Junction 7 and Junction 8 shut the eastbound carriageway without warning while congestion spread across two motorways and into Maidstone. For drivers on the M20 in Kent, whether the next bridge closure is a scheduled overnight shift or an emergency that runs until midnight depends almost entirely on whether that maintenance programme stays on track.
